About The Griot People
The Griots are traditional West African oral historians, storytellers, and musicians who preserve and transmit history, genealogy, and cultural knowledge through performance. Griots actively shape meaning-contextualizing events, affirming identity and guiding communities through transition, loss, celebration, and reconciliation, reminding leaders and families of shared values and responsibilities. Griots are respected and essential community members, with the profession often passed down through families and requiring rigorous, lifelong training. Historically, their roles were multifaceted, including advising royalty and entertaining. Modern-day Griots have adapted to modern media, and yet they remain vital in keeping cultural heritage alive and reinforcing the undeniable value of our stories.
